Curriculum


Each week we'll be focusing on specific parts of a match race, and we've come up with some suggested reading that will give you a head start when you get to class. You'll want to get a copy of the following documentation:

NOTE: The North U book will not be updated to reflect the changes in the Rules for 2009 in time for the clininc. Check back for updates as we figure out the changes that will be nessasary for 2009.

Week 1 - 101 / Starting Part 1
Basic calls and penalties, the starting sequence, entering the box, the dial up

Suggested reading:
  • North U. - Basic Match Racing, Understanding the Game pages 6-19 and 32-61
  • RRS # C3.1, C3.2, C4, 10, 11, 12, C2.4, 14, 15, 16.1, C2.5 AND 20
  • RRS Definitions: Clear Astern and Clear Ahead, Overlap, Keep Clear, Leeward and Windward, Proper Course, Room, and Tack, Starboard or Port
  • UMP Calls: 1-5, 38 and MR Call 1

Week 2 - Starting Part 2
Leading vs. trailing, hooking, lay lines, circling

Suggested reading:
  • North U. - Basic Match Racing, Understanding the Game pages 62-83
  • RRS # 17, 18, 18.1, 18.2
  • RRS Definitions: Mark, Obstruction, Racing, Two-Length Zone
  • UMP Calls: 6 , 7, 9, 10, 12, 13, 14, 16, 20, 27 and 35

Week 3 - Boat Handling and Speed
Sail trim, heel, sheets, momentum, rolling, getting up to speed, slow and stopping, more starting practice

Suggested reading:
  • North U. - Basic Match Racing, Understanding the Game catch up on last weeks reading, and pages 31-32
  • RRS # 17, 18, 18.1, 18.2
  • RRS Definitions: Mark, Obstruction, Proper Course + C2.2, Racing, Start, and Two-Length Zone

Week 4 - Upwind and Rounding the Weather Mark
Left/right/middle, tactics, tacking duals, approaching the mark from left vs. right, lay lines, tack set

  • RRS # 17, 18, 18.1, 18.2 and C2.6

Week 5 - Downwind
Leading vs. trailing, soaking, gybing, getting and staying away from a penalty

Suggested reading:

  • RRS : #17, C2.4, C2.8, 22
  • UMP Calls: 18, 19 and MR: 6, 29

Week 6 - Rounding the Leeward Mark/ Finishing
Taking someone passed starboard lay line, dousing after passing starboard lay line, exiting leeward mark, finishing

Suggested reading:
  • North U. - Basic Match Racing, Understanding the Game pages 109-124
  • RRS : Re-read #17.1, 18, 18.1, and 18.2. Also Read 18.4, C2.1 and C3.3
  • UMP Calls: 18, 19 and MR: 6, 29

Saterday August 15th - Final Races
